Golden Occupational Therapist has partnered up with Utopia Centre in Groblersdal. They provide for the educational needs of 8 learners who have a variety of disabilities on a daily basis. These disabilities include Cerebral Palsy, Hemophilia, Intellectual Disability, Epilepsy, Autism, Diabetes and more.

This is the start of a very exciting journey!

I had a meeting with the director of Utopia Centre a while back to find out what the needs of the kids there are. Saartjie Hessels (078 569 4049) is really doing amazing work there! After a long discussion about the various needs of the learners under her care, it became clear that one of her biggest requests was to have a baseline of abilities for each of her learners.

Saartjie explained that she would like to know what each learners basic abilities are so that she can build a sort of curriculum for the learner based on that. I was very excited to explain that this was exactly what I could help with! I could assess their cognitive, motor, physical, emotional and overall abilities and compose these into a thorough report based on my findings.

We agreed that I would volunteer my time and services to do a thorough Occupational Therapy assessment on each learner and provide a report thereafter. This will be used by the facilitators and any potential sponsors.

I have full confidence that this process will assist Utopia to enrich the daily lives of the incredible learners in their care, and I am eternally grateful for this small deed that I can do to help our community.

If you are interested in assisting in the work being done, please contact Saartjie on the above number, or visit them in person at: 28 West Street, Groblersdal. Their website is: http://utopiacentre.co.za/
